Our mind and body can only handle what we can recover from.
Too much mental or physical stress leads to injury, illness, and an unwell body.
In a world where more is better, many of us suffer from attempting too much. We spread ourselves too thin. We take on more than we can handle.
If we do not take care of ourselves it is only a matter of time until a breakdown occurs.
How do we achieve enough rest to ensure our mind and body recovers properly?
The first step is sleep. Sleep is the foundation of recovery for our organism. To ensure proper sleep create a consistent sleep schedule and environment. Going to bed at the same time will do wonders for your sleep hygiene. Create a dark, cool space free of electronics and distractions to get the most out of your slumber.
Next is a daily stress reduction routine. This is something that relieves you of all the mentally exhausting work you encounter on a daily basis. Meditation and deep breathing are great practices to install here. Other options may be reading, journaling, or taking a walk outside.
From here look at your work and exercise schedules. When you leave work are you actually leaving or do you take it home with you? If you are constantly checking emails, taking calls, or thinking about what must be done you are still stressing yourself out. Are you exercising too hard, too often? Too much exercise will wear your body down, throw off your hormones, and hurt your sleep.
What about your nutrition? Over or under eating as well as poor food choices will limit your ability to recover, increase inflammation, and make you feel miserable. Cut out sugar and artificial foods for better options like vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, eggs, and meat.
Society today glorifies those who can perform extreme feats like working 80 hours a week, sleeping 4 hours a night, and exercising hours every day. Unfortunately this a path to poor health. Cut back, allow your body to recover, and reap the rewards of healthy living.
