The Power of Positive Thinking is a book I've owned for a couple years now, but have been hesitant to read. When I first bought the book and began to read it, I was a bit put off. I didn't realize at the time of purchase that it is heavily based around Christianity, and when the author started suggesting repeating certain Bible verses a few times periodically throughout the day, I couldn't find the energy to continue reading. I just wasn't "feeling it" at the time.
Many days have passed I've now read the book. I enjoyed it. It was a fairly simple read. It is 17 chapters and just over 200 pages worth of material. What I enjoyed most in the book are the basic principles it preaches along with the step-by-step actions Dr. Peale suggests you follow.
I believe the two core principles of the book are optimism and faith. Yes, Dr. Peale was a very religious man, and his content revolves around faith in God, but if that is not who you are then it is important that you find faith in someone or something. If you have faith in yourself and believe the world will turn in your favor it usually does. Confidence and optimism are vital to any success story. I've never read about any successful person who believed the world was out to get them and they would never amount to anything in their lives, have you? The book preaches that by believing in yourself and having faith in the Lord you can achieve a happy and successful life. I personally believe that is very true. Faith, whatever that means to you, and optimism are two constants in every success story.
The practical actions Dr. Peale suggests are a mix of studying the bible, focusing on certain verses, as well as individual practices revolving around remaining calm and believing in yourself.
The book is simple and easy to follow. Dr. Peale reveals success stories in every chapter ranging from business and relationships to health and addiction. If you don't mind a book based in religion, I would highly recommend reading it.
